Modeling the Time-Dependent Optical Properties of the Multicomponent Aerosols in the Marine Boundary Layer

چکیده
Specific objectives of our research are: (1) elucidate the links between dust particles morphology (shape and size), composition, optical properties and related radiative effects; (2) relate the properties of dust to its source and investigate the evolution of dust properties during transport in the marine boundary layer, focusing on the comparative analysis of the Asian, African, Southwestern U.S., and Saudi Arabian types of dust. (3) improve algorithms for prediction of frequency-dependent optical properties of mineral dust accounting for its mineralogical composition, life cycle, and interaction with other atmospheric aerosols in the clean and polluted marine environment.

Determination of Marine Aerosol Properties Using a Bistatic Nephelometer
Our long-term goal is to develop methods to characterize remotely the optical properties of aerosols in the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL). The method is based on instruments and analytic methods that use angle-dependent polarization information from the light scattered by aerosols. The information derived from these measurements will enable accurate prediction of the aerosol optical ...

In this study, measured hydrophysical data collected by the University of Miami researchers from the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz during the period December 1996 to March 1998 and climate data from the Qeshm island meteorological station were used to simulate water column turbulence south of the Qeshm Island, via General Ocean Turbulence Model (GOTM). The model does not use slip and fl...
متن کاملPolarized light scattering by aerosols in the marine atmospheric boundary layer.
The intensity and polarization of light scattered from marine aerosols affect visibility and contrast in the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL). The polarization properties of scattered light in the MABL vary with size, refractive index, number distributions, and environmental conditions. Laboratory measurements were used to determine the characteristics and variability of the polarizatio...
متن کاملMeasurements of Aerosol properties in the MABL Using Polarization Nephelometry
The long-term goal is to develop and evaluate polarization sensitive instrumentation to improve the measurement and understanding of the properties of aerosols in the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL). Aerosol components include sea salt containing aerosols, sulfates, continental aerosols, diesel and fire smoke. Accurate characterization of the aerosols in the MABL on a real-time basis r...
متن کاملMarine Aerosols: Hygroscopocity and Aerosol-Cloud Relationships
The long-term goal of this project is to predict the radiative properties of the marine atmosphere based on aerosol and cloud properties. OBJECTIVES The objective of the project is to improve our understanding of the role of aerosols in the Marine Boundary Layer and our ability to simulate marine stratocumulus clouds as a function of aerosol properties and the large-scale meterology. APPROACH T...
